Dry Ridge Roofing

Ridge Tiles Held by Fixings, Not by Mortar That Cracks

On most older roofs the ridge tiles along the top are bedded in sand and cement. Up there, the mortar takes every frost and every gusty spell, and once it cracks the tiles are held mostly by their own weight. Wind gets underneath, a tile shifts, and rain runs straight into the ridge and down onto the timbers.

With a dry ridge, the mortar is swapped for a fixed ridge batten, a weatherproof roll laid over the apex and screws or clips through each ridge tile. Nothing relies on mortar holding, so there is no bedding to crack and wash out onto the slopes. It is a sound choice when ridge tiles have already slipped, when repointing the ridge keeps coming round again, or when you are re-roofing.

Many dry ridge systems also let air move out along the apex. A ventilated ridge helps lift moist air from the loft, which matters on Dublin roofs where damp weather and well-insulated lofts can leave condensation on the underside of the felt. We reuse your existing ridge tiles where they are sound, or match new ones if not.

Pricing

What Affects Your Dry Ridge Quote?

No two roofs in Dublin are quite the same, so we price after seeing yours. Below are the four factors that move the figure on your written quote most for this job.

Factor 01

Length of the Ridge

The ridge on a terraced house is short, while a detached roof with hips can run to several times the length.

Factor 02

Reusing or Replacing Tiles

Sound ridge tiles can go back on, while broken or odd ones need replacing, which can mean sourcing a colour and profile to suit.

Factor 03

Ventilation Required

A ventilated ridge system costs a little more than a standard dry ridge, and is worth it where the loft shows signs of condensation.

Factor 04

Access & Roof Height

Steep or tall roofs, and those without easy access from the front, need more scaffolding to work along the apex safely.

FAQs

Your Dry Ridge Questions Answered

What is a dry ridge system?

Put simply, it holds ridge tiles in place with mechanical fixings rather than mortar. A batten is fixed along the top of the roof, a weatherproof roll goes over it, and each ridge tile is screwed and clipped in place. Because nothing depends on a mortar bed, there is nothing to crack or wash out, and the usual cause of loose ridge tiles is gone.

Is dry ridge better than repointing the ridge?

Repointing renews the mortar, but the same weather that cracked it the first time is still there. A dry ridge takes the mortar out of the picture and holds each tile with fixings instead. If your ridge is sound and only needs a small repair, repointing can still be sensible, and we will say so when we see it.

Can you reuse my existing ridge tiles?

Usually, yes. We lift them carefully, clean off the old mortar and refit any that are sound. Cracked or broken tiles are replaced with ones matched as closely as possible to the colour and profile of the originals, so the finished ridge looks consistent from the street.

How much time does fitting a dry ridge need?

Most houses need around a day or two on the roof once the access is ready, though a long ridge with hips, or a roof with awkward access, takes longer. We avoid leaving the apex open in poor weather and plan the work around the forecast where we can.

What is the best way to have my ridge priced?

Phone us or use the quote form with your Eircode and a note on what you have seen, such as a slipped ridge tile or mortar in the gutter. Before pricing we arrange to see the ridge, and the written quote you receive covers its length, the system we suggest and any replacement tiles.
