Small Roofs, Close Neighbours, Careful Work

Much of Rialto is made up of small red-brick cottages and two-storey terraces, built in long rows with shared chimneys and party walls. The roofs are small, but there is a lot packed into them: every house meets two neighbours, and many have a rear extension with its own roof tucked in behind.

When the original covering has failed across the roof, we strip it back to the rafters, repair any rotten timber, and rebuild with breathable membrane, treated battens and new slate or tile. The junctions with the houses on either side are finished carefully, because that is where a terrace roof most often lets water in.

Access to these streets can be tight, so we plan scaffolding and deliveries before the job starts.
